Structure of a GTIN
In healthcare, 14-digit GTINs are required and are composed of:
Package Level: Indicates the packaging hierarchy. For example, ‘0’ might indicate a base unit, ‘3’ a pack, and ‘5’ a case. The assignment of indicators is flexible and guided by the GS1 standards. The package level pertains to a 14-digit GTIN.
GS1 Company Prefix: This segment identifies the manufacturer or brand owner of the product. It is assigned by the local GS1 office and ensures that the GTIN is globally unique.
Item Reference: This segment is a unique number within the scope of the company prefix that differentiates each product.
Check Digit: This segment is the final digit and is calculated using a specific algorithm to confirm the integrity of the GTIN.
This structure ensures that each GTIN is unique and can be validated for accuracy.
