Create a New Description Scheme
Description schemes improve consistency in your item master. Before you create a new description, identify your particular description type needs, such as a MMIS description or a clinical description.

To create a new description scheme:
- Click the Content Mgmt tab.
- Click Description Generation.
Tip: To see the Custom Description Columns view, you may need to click View Selector and select Description Scheme.
- Click the New
icon. The New Custom Description wizard opens.
- Complete the first description wizard screen.
Wizard steps:
- Enter a Name.
- Enter a Maximum Length for your description. The default value is 200.
- Select Auto Generate Descriptions if you want to schedule daily or weekly auto-regeneration of descriptions in NuVia.
- Do not select Reorder Duplicate Descriptions.
- Click Next.
- Complete the second description wizard screen.
Wizard steps:
- Select an Abbreviation Dictionary. Options are:
- GHX – GHX abbreviations based on American National Standards Institute (ANSI) abbreviations
- Customer – Your abbreviation dictionary
- Both – Applies your abbreviation when available and applies the NuVia abbreviation if one is not available in your dictionary
- None – No abbreviations
- Select the abbreviation frequency. Options are: always, based on character length, and never.
- Type a number in the field, if you select based on character length. The default value is 30.
- Click Next.
- Select an Abbreviation Dictionary. Options are:
- Complete the third description wizard screen.
Wizard steps:
- Select an attribute order. Options are:
- NuVia Optimized – Based on the UNSPSC Noun and Type, it is specifically designed for 30-character descriptions and ensures that the key differentiating attributes of each product group are promoted in the sequence
- Procedure-based – The specific attribute order is designed to help you locate items for procedures
- Brandname-based – The specific attribute order is designed to help you locate items by brand
- Customer Optimized – Your custom attribute order for all items of a specific Noun and Type, and NuVia Optimized for all items without a customer optimized attribute rule
- Custom Order – Allows you to arrange attributes in the order you want to them to shown in item descriptions
- Re-order the attributes using
and
, if you selected Custom Orders.
- Click Next.
- Select an attribute order. Options are:

Click Finish.
Note: The description scheme status updates to “Running.” You can perform other tasks in or even log out of the system. The status changes to "Complete" when the job is complete.
- Go to the Virtual Item Master to view your new item descriptions
Note: All item descriptions are included in item exports. Description scheme names are shown in the column header.
